Nations join to curb pirate submarines in Mediterranean

Geneva reports nine nations led by Britain and France form an anti piracy patrol to seek and sink submarines attacking merchant ships. Britain plans 40 destroyers, France 18 ships, Italy to respond. Delegates warn Italy may supply subs for the Spanish Nationalists, but Italy’s participation is accepted in principle. The pact forbids belligerent actions in Spain and requires surface operations with cautious coordination among signatories.

Report on Earl Foster Condition

Earl Foster of Overbrook road is reported by Elyria Memorial Hospital to be in serious condition from burns suffered Thursday when a home basement incinerator exploded. Foster sustained burns to the chest arms hands and neck. His wife suffered less serious burns while their son William 15 fought the flames and extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived. Foster serves as secretary and treasurer of the Foster Manufacturing Company.

Tryout Tomorrow For E. H. S. Cheerleaders

Elyria High School will hold a morning assembly for cheerleader tryouts with Maynard Unger Robert Minch Ward Travers Robert Phelps Carl Brookhouser and Keefe Brussell among the six nominees. The six finalists will be elected by students after the assembly and three will lead Friday night’s opening football game with band and coaches speaking.

Virginia Ruswell age 3 died when she pulled down a flower box from a front porch in Cleveland. The structure toppled and crushed her, investigators said yesterday.

Chinese Troops Retreat To New Shanghai Defense Line

Chinese troops retreat westward through the Yangtze Delta under German and Japanese guidance as Japanese guns fire heavily. Babson Warns Of 20 Cent Dollar Threat

Boston economist Roger W. Babson warned the Boston Chamber of Commerce that a 20 cent dollar is possible. Bank At Good Hope Robbed

Two young armed men robbed The Farmers Bank at Good Hope ten miles southeast of Washington D. H. at 10 20 a m escaping in a black sedan with yellow wheels. Amount stolen not yet known. Accomplice waited outside driving the car last seen toward Linden. Sheriff Eisenhauer reported wide search by neighboring sheriffs and highway patrol. The cashier Miss Essie Talmer was in contact by telephone. The bank had been robbed before three years earlier by youths from Columbus.

Death of Masaryk Shakes Czechoslovakia at 87

Prague reports the death of Thomas Garrigue Masaryk at 3 29 am at age 87 after pneumonia and an arterial condition. He led Czechoslovakia as its first president and was called the father of his country. A national mourning period and state funeral are planned with his body in Lang Castle and Lang Park vault burial on September 21.

Ford Brown Named Drum Major for Elyria High Band

Elyria High School senior Ford Brown will lead the marching band as drum major this year replacing drums with a baton. Music director J Martin Beck announced the selection today and Brown will debut this afternoon ahead of Friday nights football game.

Resume Hearings In Gas Rate Cases

State wide aspects of the Columbus Gas Rate case affecting charges in 11 cities and towns besides Columbus were deferred briefly as hearings resumed. Cross examination of Loy E. Welker and L A Seyffert sought to clear loose ends from July 1. The commission has consolidated 17 pending gas rate cases involving 12 cities to allow wholesale gas price evidence to be presented for all cases at once. Tomorrow the hearing was to reach that stage.

Begin Excavating At Hospital For Boiler Installation

Excavation started at Elyria Memorial Hospital today for a 200 hp boiler to modernize heating. It will replace two 100 hp boilers, currently aided by a 109 hp boiler. New unit to be ready by November 1. Old boilers sold to E Hyman Company for scrap.

Elyria High School approves 600 wire baskets purchase

The Elyria Board of Education last night approved buying 600 wire baskets for the boys gym clothes at an estimated cost of 210 dollars. Assistant to the superintendent W Q McClellan told the board the baskets are needed due to locker room changes at the high school gym.

Appointment Of Five Elyria Teachers Approved

Five teachers already teaching in Elyria schools were officially approved by the Elyria Board of Education last night. The appointments, previously announced, include Miss Mary Ellen Garford in kindergarten, Mrs. Louise Baumhardt as half time kindergarten, and Miss Francesca Clinker Miss Zeta Mae Brooks and Miss Mary Sheely as elementary teachers. Superintendent R. C. Maston was given authority to hire so they would be ready for the new school year.

Elyria Drum Corps Heads to National Legion Meet

Large crowd of Elyrians will join Elyria Post No 12 drum and bugle corps for the national American Legion convention in New York next week. The special train departs Elyria Friday evening, with stops in Washington and Philadelphia for preliminaries. Final events include a 24 hour parade in New York, with limited train seats and hotel rooms still available.

30 Motorists Halted In Lake Avenue School Zone Sweep

Deputy Hudak and Deputy Fulton report Lorain County drivers, mainly residents, violate the 20 mile hour school zone limit on Lake Avenue past Lake Avenue School and Telegraph Road. About 30 motorists were stopped before classes. Arrest slips may follow after a warning period. A prior arrest in Ridgeville fined Ralph H. Atkinson $16.94 for passing a school bus. Billboards with safety slogans may be used to alert motorists.

Dr C A Shimansky age 63 died yesterday in Sandusky after 29 years as a local physician. He formerly served as a commodore of the Sandusky Yacht Club.
