The Elyria school system plans transfers to reduce crowded classes. R C Maston says 24 rooms exceed 40 students while three rooms top 50, largest 54 in 3-B Franklin. Transfer zones amid district borders aim to balance enrollments, though some schools may remain crowded.
Organization of wheat growers in Brownhelm Black River and Amherst townships postponed when low turnout showed a conflict with another event. The group will meet September 22 to sign agreements to reduce wheat acreage and elect a committee to supervise the adjustment program. Tonight two more meetings are planned at Pittsfield Town Hall for Pittsfield and Russia townships and at Wellington Town Hall for Wellington and Huntington townships.
Mostly cloudy with possible showers in the Southeast tonight and cooler in the South and Central. Friday looks fair and slightly warmer in the North and West. The 24 hour weather notes cite a Western Missouri disturbance moving northeast, blocked by a high pressure area north of the lakes, with Cochrane reporting 30.48 inches. Showers covered a broad area from New England to Texas, while Alberta’s disturbance brought light rains to the Northwest. Temperatures are above normal citywide except in the Northeast, lower lake region, middle Mississippi Valley, and California where readings run slightly below normal.
Elyria school enrollment rose to 4855 for the first three days of the 1933 34 year. Grade schools gained 15 with the high school down one. total 2993 in grade schools and 1862 in the high school. Kindergarten figures are not included as none operate this year.
General Hugh S. Johnson predicted unemployment relief by Oct. 1 as New York staged a vast peace-time demonstration for the national recovery program. The mass event in Fifth Avenue, with 20,000 marchers hourly, featured Gov. Lehman, Gov. Cross, Mayor O'Brien, Grover Whalen, and W. Averell Harriman.
Ten men were wounded at Gates near Uniontown as strike breakers tried to enter an H C Frick Coke mine. Among the injured was Lloyd Cutwright a 23 year old deputy seriously wounded and possibly losing a left arm. The strike shutdowns spread across Fayette county as miners held a holiday to press for a coal code and U M W A recognition.
Four damage suits totaling eighty five thousand dollars were filed in common pleas court today against Harold Kauffman of Lorain due to an automobile collision on May 31 at Stop 2 Lake road. Plaintiffs are four Wiseman family members riding with Earl Phillips. Harold seeks thirty five thousand, Arline ten thousand, Harold junior fifteen thousand, and Nancy twenty five thousand.
Sixteen patients were examined at the semi monthly chest clinic at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Six new tuberculosis cases were found, one from Elyria and five from the rest of the county. Examinations were led by Dr. A E Smith with assistants Kathryn Fulton and Ruth Paddock. Many requests were turned away due to capacity, with future exams set for September 28. The clinic, held twice monthly, showcases rising interest in TB diagnosis and treatment amid an educational push.
Facing severe fiscal strain, Sheffield Lake Village proposes a two year two mill levy for current expenses and a nine year one mill levy to retire debt. Village officials say $8,000 yearly is needed for two years, with $21,000 of indebtedness to be refunded. School board seeks a two year one mill levy to raise $4,000 annually. Other townships also seek school levies. filing deadlines push this to November ballots.
Columbus reports that the Public Works Board for Ohio approved Ohio projects for submission to the Federal board. Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works granted $25,537,625 to several states, including Cincinnati and Cleveland. Cincinnati received $177,580 for sewage and $27,900 for roads while Cleveland was allotted $650,000 for park work.
The Peoples Dairy Company in ARRON O is drilling near its building in an effort to find a water supply and has encountered a gas flow rated at 20 000 to 100 000 cubic feet daily. East Ohio Gas experts will inspect the well and the company hopes the gas will cut fuel and power costs. Nearby property owners have begun plans to have drillers seek gas on their land.
Ward T. Van Orman and Frank Trotter, balloonists from Akron, were missing for eight days in northern Ontario. They arrived in Toronto in a gaunt but recovering condition, bearing injuries and suffering from privations and food poisoning.
Lorain County sets a fly free date of September 24 for wheat seeding this year. Acting county extension agent C Hummel says seedings after this date have reasonable assurance of Hessian fly freedom, while earlier sowing risks infestation despite the past years' lower presence. Last year statewide infestation reached eight percent, underscoring the warning to delay planting.
Robert P. Lamont resigns as president of the American Iron and Steel Institute, citing lack of sympathy for the National Recovery program. The move comes after a resignation letter dated Sept 1 to 200 steel company executives. Lamont will be replaced by Charles M. Schwab, with the institute focusing on enforcing the steel code.

Lamont's views in his resignation letter as president of the American Iron and Steel Institute Lamont left over government supervision of the industry under NRA as a factor affecting his usefulness.

In Columbus on September 14 the Ohio General Assembly in special session debated a one percent sales tax to fund schools. The House faced pressure from administration allies and lobbyists while postponing a vote. Absent members were being courted, and a two percent proposal with one percent for real estate relief circulated as a tactic. Parochial schools asked for four million dollars under a broader exchange of support, while the Armbruster road bond fund was linked to sales tax support. The Senate, however, approved an amendment financing weak districts, and Governor White claimed leeway for the legislature.
Miss Dorothy Jones, former art supervisor in Elyria elementary schools, is appointed teacher of art methods at Kent State College. She led local art programs for years until cost reductions ended the role, and after a year of study at Kent, she joined the faculty following graduation.
Washington Sept 14 A new study of industrial and retail costs was begun by the Recovery Administration to form a basis for decisions on price control. A committee led by Secretary of Commerce Roper will seek a basic rule for production and merchandising costs to standardize procedures across trades. The NRA retail code, set to fix prices, undergoes review by advisory boards and may prompt further discussion with the consumers board over safeguards against broad price fixing. The code currently proposes minimum prices about 10 percent above cost, a figure debated through negotiations.
A fire swept through an airplane repair and salvage plant near Grand Central Terminal in Glendale California early today. Five airplanes and the plant, owned by Air Transport Co Ltd, were destroyed with losses estimated at 120000 dollars.
Yasuya Uchida resigned as foreign minister of Japan on September 14. Koki Hirota, former ambassador to Soviet Russia, was installed as his successor by Emperor Hirohito. observers said the change would boost General Sadao Araki and strengthen the government’s nationalist aims.
The third annual No Accident Campaign for Lorain County Industries starts October 1 and runs through year end. T. P. Kearns of the Ohio Industrial Commission says the drive will educate workers and bosses about accident hazards and reduce injuries by about 25 percent, as in prior campaigns. H. M. Schnerer returns as campaign manager and Earl D. Bacon aids as secretary with local chambers assisting. 250 firms are expected to participate with driver costs covered by sponsors.

Washington reports the NRA moved to speed up coal code negotiations as Pennsylvania miners prepare a march in protest over delays. Deputy Administrator Simpson and NRA counsel Richberg finished proposed revisions to the administrative section and planned talks with operator representatives. Mine leaders charge operators delay a deal to raise coal surpluses and cut costs, while President Roosevelt weighs possible intervention.
Buffalo's grain strike, which had disrupted over 3,000,000 bushels of grain, ended last night. About 600 men went back to work at noon today.
