Alaska Railroad under Johnson drives postwar revival
General manager Johnson, appointed after a red year, led the Alaska Railroad through a $75,000,000 rehabilitation, replacing rolling stock with 1000 horsepower diesels, converting hospital cars, inaugurating two Aurora streamliners between Anchorage and Fairbanks, and boosting road bed with 115 pound rails. The railroad posted a profit of 3700 last year, kept no tariff increases since 1937, and expects over a million tons of freight on its 349 mile main line as a $200,000,000 military build up in Alaska continues.
