Nine Elyria firemen in military service during WWII
Fire Chief W. Batts reports nearly 28 percent of the Elyria Fire Department, 34 men total, are serving in the Army or Navy. Since December 7 1941, nine regulars have left, with five in the Army and four in the Navy. Three pre Pearl Harbor firefighters remained on duty, others joined as the war progressed. Total alarms reached 843, with about 270000 dollars in fire losses, including a 180000 dollar plant fire at Gilkison Manufacturing. Some veterans expect to return to firefighting soon.
