Governor White Challenges Nominees Over Ohio School Funding
Governor George White accused the Ohio General Assembly of creating a financial crisis for state schools and sub divisions. He challenged Democrats Martin J. Davey and Clarence J. Brown to present a more workable legislative program, urging new revenue measures including a sales tax, income tax, and utilities excise tax. He warned that economies alone cannot fix the shortfall, citing tax-valuation cuts that shrank 1920 to 1934 property tax receipts and forced subdivisions to seek relief.
