The Ohio race shows Bush leading Kerry with Ohio’s 20 electoral votes crucial. Polls indicate Bush ahead after the GOP convention while both states Florida and Ohio loom large for campaign spending. Kerry plans heavy TV buys in Florida and Ohio amid party-line shifts and voter essays.
Four years ago Bush won Ohio by 3.6 percent with large majorities near Cincinnati and rural areas. Gore carried the Cleveland area by about 165,000 votes. The old rule that Cleveland must yield 125,000 for a Democrat to win Ohio is challenged by 2000 results. Exit polls show Bush won independents and 44 percent doubt his knowledge, yet 10 percent still backed him.
Denver based Qwest Communications International agreed to settle federal allegations with the SEC for 250 million dollars. A union official cited the tentative deal while a company spokesman said cooperation with regulators continues. The SEC had probed swaps and revenue timing tied to directory sales and long term capacity assets, leading to restated 2001 and 2002 results and the 2002 departure of ex CEO Joe Nacchia.
The Associated Press reports Democrats reversed a prior plan and will run television ads in Missouri and Colorado. The states, once deemed less competitive, show Kerry trailing Bush with double digit gaps in Missouri. The DNC had set aside about 6 million for 14 battleground states and had not funded Missouri or Colorado in the current wave.
