Gas Company Striker Is Sentenced
Raymond C. Coss, 29, a belden area striker, was sentenced by Common Pleas Judge D. A. Cook to an indeterminate term of one to seven years in Mansfield Reformatory after pleading guilty to destruction of gas company property estimated at 40,000 dollars. Coss, a New Lexington resident with four children, has been unemployed eight months. Prosecutor Howard R. Butler said the plea surprised him, as he expected a not guilty plea and bond request. Coss is on probation from Wayne County where he was indicted for destruction of gas company property. The judge said such acts discredit labor, while noting leaders in labor will not tolerate it. Six defendants face destruction of a gas well during February drilling at Belden, with damage estimated at 3,700 dollars. Philip Cobb of Medina pleaded not guilty yesterday and is held on 1,500-dollar bond. Other arraigned defendants—William Adams, Kenneth Alexander, Weldon Anderson—pleaded not guilty. Adams’s bond was reduced to 2,000 dollars. One defendant remains to be arraigned.
