Few Children Play Truant As School Starts

Elyria expects fewer truants as the new term begins. Attendance officer C. M. Williams reports only six students labeled truant so far, down from the start of last year, with many cases found absent or enrolled elsewhere or in parochial schools. Working permits remain in demand, with thirty three issued this month, largely for children who wish to remain out of school.

Sweden launches first aerial passenger cat in balloon

Sweden’s first aerial passenger was a cat aboard a balloon released September 17, 1774 in Stockholm. The craft, built by Prof J C Wilcke and Baron Goeran Silfverhjelm, carried a cat in a gondola with a message to the Swedish Academy of Science. The Queen opened the release as dignitaries watched, the cat later found aboard Vermhoen Island with the gondola missing.
