On the road for peace march moves toward DC

From California in March thousands joined the peace march. Dwindling ranks leave Huron and travel Rt 6 toward Vermilion. about 600 remain. They plan to reach Washington, DC by Nov 15 as B-1 stories note. Gene Krebs captured the scene.

No Passing on Lake Road Draws City Hall Heat

Sheffield Lake safety chief says the 5 mile Lake Road no passing rule was a safety decision by the mayor, police chief, and service director. City Council faced complaints and sought accountability as drivers push back against the nearly four mile line painted in August on the 35 mph street.

Elyria seeks quarry removal from Superfund cleanup list

Elyria appeals in a Washington DC court to have the city owned quarry on West River Road near Infirmary Road removed from the federal Superfund cleanup program. City officials blame LTV Corp for pollutants and say the acid does not threaten the environment while EPA cautions groundwater and the Black River could be affected.

City appeals EPA quarry Superfund designation

In the appeal the city says EPA data used to place the quarry on the Superfund list is flawed. Gurchik noted that under Superfund the EPA pays upfront study and cleanup costs and later seeks recovery from liable parties. The agency must decide whether the city, LTV, or both bear responsibility.

Rambo style knife attack leaves two youths injured in Lorain

A 15-year-old required 25 stitches after a Tuesday night disturbance involving five juveniles and three teens. Ravelle Jones, 18, was charged with two counts of felonious assault. A second 15-year-old was treated for knife wounds at St Joseph Hospital. Police say the incident began near the Lorain Public Library and moved to a playground. The Rambo knife, 17 inches long with a 12 inch blade, was found in a boarded house crawl space.

United Way sets a $2.85 million goal in Lorain County

United Way of Greater Lorain County aims for a $2.85 million campaign goal, $50,000 above last year. Robert Cook cites economic difficulties facing major local corporations and USX Lorain plant strikes as factors, with 89 percent of agency requests funded this year. He urges broader business donations and a campaign restructure to boost volunteer involvement and funds.
