House defies Reagan on spending veto

The House overridden Reagan on a 14.2 billion spending bill, shifting nearly 21 billion from defense to domestic programs. Enemies become friends at U-505 sub crew reunion

In Chicago a rare reunion saw Earl Trosino and Hans Goebeler, once foes in World War II, clasping arms and calling each other brothers. Trosino, 75, served on the USS Guadalcanal as U-505 was captured, while Goebeler, 59, sailed on the German submarine. About 100 surviving U-505 crew members and task-force sailors gathered at Zum Deutschen Eck Restaurant and later at O’Hare, sharing smiles and cautious dialogue as memories surfaced. The submarine’s capture, long kept secret, marked a historic Allied victory as the only German vessel seized by the United States during the war.

The Labor Department noted wholesale prices increased 0.6 percent in August with food up 0.1 percent and energy up 1.2 percent. Energy inflation slowed sharply from July’s 5.7 percent while gasoline inflation eased after a 7.9 percent surge. If the August rate held for a year, the annual gain would be 7.6 percent.

House to let farmers defer loans not a handout

The House narrowly backs a plan to allow Farmers Home Administration loan borrowers a one year deferral on repayments and extend the farm credit program through 1985. Agriculture Secretary John Block calls it gift like and says it shifts taxpayer risk, while supporters say it provides breathing room until recovery. The measure now advances to the Senate for action.
