West Berlin has a 360 foot trash mountain turned recreational hill. New York’s Sanford Garelik proposes a 2500 foot refuse mountain in Pelham Bay Park with dirt layers and eventual ski use. Chicago’s Frank Dalton envisions a 1000 foot mass over two miles with lakes and trails, built from solid waste over 26 years.

Man 62 Struck and Killed Near Mailbox in Ohio

Roy L. Berrington, 62, of 44293 Rt 10, was fatally struck while crossing Rt 10 near his home in Russia Township. Douglas D. Bowen, 23, of RD 1 Spencer, driving about 60 mph, remained uncharged. Vehicle traveled 242 feet after impact. witness Roger Angelhorte’s car hit a mailbox while avoiding Bowen’s car.

Rail strike deadline reset as unions delay action

Negotiators for railroads and four AFL CIO unions extend talks after unions postpone the nationwide strike deadline for five days at federal request. Assistant Secretary W J Usery urges hard bargaining for a peaceful settlement covering about 500 000 workers. The new deadline is 12 01 a.m. Monday. The White House consulted in the delay but unions warned no further postponements. The four unions seek sizable raises plus cost of living and other benefits.

Violence flares in Amman as cease-fire holds briefly

In Amman Jordan fighting between Palestinian guerrillas and Jordanian troops continued despite a cease-fire declared Wednesday. The Inter-Continental Hotel housed 154 refugees from three hijacked airliners. no injuries were reported among them. Premier Rifai and PLO leader Arafat attended peace talks as fighting resumed at dawn and later subsided.
