McCarthy Wins By Large Margin In Wisconsin Primary

Milwaukee voters gave Senator Joseph McCarthy a record renomination as he led the Republican field with 395,043 votes to Leonard Schmitt’s 156,025 and four others. In the Democratic primary Thomas Fairchild led with 68,532 over Henry Reuss 55,762. McCarthy framed the victory as a mandate on corruption and anti communism.

New Red Cross Executive Takes Charge in Elyria

Miss Virginia Hazzard has been named executive director of the Elyria Chapter of the American Red Cross. A native of East Rochester New York she is a St. Lawrence University alumna and has held roles with the University of Rochester Public Information Bureau the Student Christian Movement and the American National Red Cross as a field representative for New York State. She arrives after two months with the Louisville Regional Blood Program and will reside at 210 Pers Avenue sharing an apartment with Miss Constance Lynch.

Elyria Man Sustains Severe Injuries In Cave-In

Andrew Dobav of 515 East Avenue was trapped for over 15 minutes when a 14 foot ditch on Marseilles Avenue near Poplar Street caved in. He suffered a broken left arm a fractured nose and possible chest abdomen and back injuries and remained conscious during rescue before being taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital in fair condition.

Proposed New Water District To Be Discussed In Lorain

Huntington couple to celebrate 68th wedding anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Davidson of Huntington will mark their 68th anniversary on September 11 after eloping to Greenville in 1884. They farmed in Huntington, later moving near Town Hall Route 58. They have a son Floyd in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Gilkison to Resume Red Rider Lawn Furniture Line

Gilkison company officials announced plans to resume production starting with the Red Rider spring steel hobby horse as the first step back into steel lawn furniture. George Cowley said orders for about 10 000 hobby horses are expected and a return to furniture production is hoped. The plant, once at 75 workers, now subcontracts metal stamping and finishing and has 15 presses. Dr Fortney Returns Home From Illness Confinement

County commissioner R J Fortney and Janm Wellington were both reported home this week to recover from an illness that kept them confined since July 26. Fortney had been at Lakeinside Hospital in Cleveland since the day after the onset and remained there until Monday according to the commissioners office.

Elyria High School plans bond issue for 2200 pupil campus

The Elyria Board of Education met in a special session to discuss high school building improvements with costs estimated between two and a half to three million dollars. They aim to place a bond on the November ballot and invite representative citizens to a meeting next Monday to seek opinions on plans including a larger auditorium cafeteria and expanded PE facilities.

Soviet Ban Blocks Allied Patrols Across East Germany Strip

Soviet troops and East German police barred American and British patrols from crossing a 100 yard East German strip separating Berlin sectors. Walter J. Donnelly, new U S high commissioner, protested to General Chuikov as patrols were redirected to Dreilinden. Donnelly passed with Maj. Gen. Lemuel A. Mathewson while others were turned back.

Fair Board Cuts Levy Request To One Year

The Lorain County Fair Board voted to reduce its levy request from one and two years to a one year one mill levy to meet an attorney general rule. The plan funds a new grandstand, coliseum, two junior fair buildings, and restrooms with totals around 329000 dollars. the one mill yield is estimated at 250900 dollars.
