Two rezoning requests draw Columbia crowd
Public hearings at the Columbia Zoning Board drew about 50 people to the town hall on Thursday. Conrad Falkenberg sought a residential to highway business rezoning for a Route 82 parcel. 30 residents opposed. The board tabled to Sept 29, ordered the owner’s name added to the application, and asked for detailed development plans. Everett Higgins sought a residential to light industrial change for four acres to allow mechanic work towing and outside vehicle storage but the planning commission recommended denial and the board denied based on current maps showing little light industrial land.

Double bass virtuoso guards fragile 1695 Carlo Textore
James VanDemark, associate professor of double bass at the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music, compares touring with his 1695 Carlo Textore instrument to traveling with a 300-pound egg. The prized bass, one of the finest, rides in a 744-foot, 80-pound case for air travel. A car crash damaged it a year and a half ago, and restoration took six months.
