Campaign focus on rising food costs in Nixon era debate
Washington notes show defense of food prices as bread costs surge after large wheat sale to the Soviet Union. Butz framed steps to curb price shocks while critics accuse the administration of favoritism toward big exporters. Stein cites 1.7 percent annual food price rise and wage controls impact, with meat costs up 11.6 percent. Wholesale prices up 4.4 percent since last August despite controls.

U S act bars private diplomacy in Hanoi visit
Washington reports that James R Hoffa seeks official permission to travel to North Vietnam to negotiate for prisoners release, challenging a long line of citizen diplomacy. The Logan Act, enacted in 1799 to curb private talks with foreign governments, remains rarely enforced though critics cite similar private efforts by Ramsey Clark and Pierre Salinger. The lone Logan Act indictment, in 1803 against Francis Fluurney, was dropped.
