Ritualistic slaying of UF professor shocks New York
AP reports two men and a 15 year old boy were arrested after the murder of University of Florida nutrition professor Howard Appledorf. Police say a ritualistic meal was eaten beside him as he died. The gay community publicly condemned the killing, aiding urgent tips leading to arrests on the East Side. Gary McNichol led detectives on a high speed chase before arrest. Two others, Paul Everson and an unidentified juvenile, were detained near gay bars. Authorities note cooperation from New York's gay community in solving the case.

IRS furlough averted as Congress averts payroll shutdown
Congress returned to Washington after temporarily averting a furlough for about one fifth of IRS workers. More than 19,000 employees were spared when two Republicans backed a stopgap move to shift 24.5 million of IRS funds to payroll, staving off immediate layoffs but warning of broader cuts if funding bills lag. Military and other agency layoffs loomed if Congress delays further funding approval.

Concord man finds peace as long-lost children reunite
George West, dying of bone cancer, found solace when six children from his two marriages located him after a 25 year separation. At Middlesex County Hospital for his 65th birthday, West’s first wife Emma and five of his eight children were present, with Arthur West and Helen from the first marriage alongside four children from the second marriage. The rediscovered family uplifted him even as he remained bedridden since April, unable to walk, yet mentally alert. The children had drifted apart after a Mississippi divorce from Gertrude, now mostly living in Milwaukee near their mother.
