Campaign Head Testifies In Hines Trial

New York September testimony in the James J. Hines trial reveals campaign finance for William C. Dodge in 1933. Henry Soblen testified he obtained eleven thousand dollars in funds via Hines with envelopes of cash. He said some money came from a sealed envelope and a source he could not identify. Witnesses linked the Dutch Schultz Lottery gang to backing Hines to help elect Dodge, a Tammany man who predated Dewey as district attorney. Sobel detailed payments including a thousand and three five hundreds, then another thousand five hundred, and five thousand more later, totaling nine thousand with a final two thousand added later. He said he called Dewey’s office three times for funds and handed details of expenditures to campaign treasurer William R. McIntosh. Dewey questioned the amounts before defense counsel waived cross examination. Sobel, the state's 42nd witness, indicated only a few more witnesses remained to be called.
