Planes Prove Inadequate For Nation's Defense

A United Press survey of this week’s tactical maneuvers by the army’s Second Observation Group finds that airfields and transportation facilities on the western coast are inadequate for rapid mobilization. Langley Field groups performed poorly on speed, hampered by limited night flying and terrain dangers. Bombers cannot be moved quickly without improved airstrips and fuel handling, delaying potential defense in a national emergency. Government or private action to expand runways and storage could avert a bottleneck, else authorities may establish land-based facilities at Midland or other sites.
