A new Elyria High student began the year amid party temptations but chose academics over social distractions. She redirected her focus to studies, shaping a brighter school year and personal turnaround.
Knollwood Elementary School closed as students and staff were evacuated to Brookside High School in Sheffield after detectors showed gas levels near explosive. Fire officials and Columbia Gas crews worked to locate the leak source at Oster Road School with no injuries reported.
Principal at Brush High School has been suspended following the surfacing of a videotaping incident involving a cheerleader. The suspension prompts investigation by district officials and raises questions about student privacy and school policy.
In Wilmington and across the region a weakened Fran became a tropical storm after destroying beach towns and churches. At least 12 people died as 115 mph winds ripped through eastern North Carolina and flooded central Virginia. Over a million customers lost power. The storm, moving into Virginia, was forecast to drop heavy rain and raise the James River to dangerous levels.
Farmers in Lorain County pleaded for rainfall as drought risk grows with dust-covered crops. Ray Diederich of the National Weather Service said a cold front brought heavy clouds but Fran’s rain was not the cause, noting it is too early for Fran to affect the area.
The region may show fewer vivid autumn colors as trees shed early due to a rainless August. Tim Fairweather notes many trees are losing leaves earlier, and only two-thirds of an inch fell in August while year-to-date rainfall sits near normal at 22.61 inches. Color peak in Lorain County typically around Oct 15.
United Way officials in Lorain County opened an 10 week campaign aiming to raise 8.95 million with a Day of Caring at Lorain County Community College attended by about 250 leaders volunteers and residents. Executive Director Jerry Skully announced 285000 raised so far representing 7.2 percent of the goal.
Jury awards Suzanne M. Cooper 208000 after J C Penney security guard accused her of shoplifting at Midway Mall. $180000 punitive and $28000 compensatory damages granted after about three hours of deliberation. Cooper’s attorney cites quota system pressures leading to a wrongful arrest in April 1954.
Velda Batton, 32, imprisoned for beating and starving her three sons ages 11, 7, and 5, asks Common Pleas Judge Kosma J. Glavas for shock probation. Her attorney argues she will change, while prosecutors urge the harshest sentence and long-term confinement.
