A Canada sourced high pressure will bring drier air to the area while lingering clouds persist into Monday. Strong southwest winds on Sept. 5 1881 fanned a mammoth forest fire in Michigan s thumb region. The blaze consumed a million acres and killed over 500 people.
The Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta hosts a memory book of handwritten recollections from viewers who watched the July 20 1969 moon landing. Entries include a South African who filmed the broadcast on a movie camera from Norway and a baby named Neil born on Armstrong’s return.
A 6,000 acre blaze advanced within a half mile of Black Butte Ranch in Oregon forcing residents to evacuate though no homes were immediately at risk. The fire was about 5 percent contained with winds expected to lessen. Across Idaho, Sun Valley and Ketchum saw 2,500 homes evacuated but were near full containment. California faced multiple fires with Highway 101 and other routes closed, while fires near Acton and Henry Coe State Park prompted evacuations and warnings of extreme growth.
