Steel chief Concessions Key to Steel Revival
Pittsburgh UPI. David M. Roderick, chairman of U S Steel, says a recovery must come through concessions to lift the industry from a low mood toward revival. He cites 40 percent capacity, 120,000 laid off, and 25,000 on short weeks, blaming imports and high wage costs. He urges sustained, unified action between management and the United Steelworkers to avert layoffs and preserve future in steel.

Labor history begins with bitter chapter in Cleveland notes
William Ganson Rose's Making of a City is cited as the era’s most comprehensive history, yet critics say it glosses labor strife such as mills in Newburgh facing danger during a July strike. The Labor History Society, with 20 to 40 members, seeks deeper research and will host a Greater Cleveland Labor History Conference at Cuyahoga Community College on November 19–20 with keynote William Winpisinger, IAM president.
