Wapakoneta Prepares for Armstrong Homecoming

The town of Wapakoneta plans a large welcome for Neil Armstrong with about 100000 expected crowds and 40000 cars. Traffic control by 300 police officers and concession stands at Auglaize County fairgrounds will handle the reception after a 217 mule parade. The event hub is Tranquility Base with Apollo Drive and Lift Off Lane named streets and WIW TV coverage hosted by Bob Hope. Rhodes to Review Ohio State Construction Projects

Gov. James A. Rhodes planned a cabinet meeting to review state construction projects and assess compliance with President Nixon's plan to cut back federally funded highway building. Brazil kidnappers seize U.S. ambassador in Rio

In Rio de Janeiro two dozen hours pass as 15 political prisoners are demanded for ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick release. Four gunmen abducted Elbrick from his limousine and chloroformed him, leaving a ransom note and a bomb. North Ridgeville water transfer debated by officials

Lorain County Commissioner Fred Ritenauer questioned Mayor Richard Noll's plan to transfer the North Ridgeville water system from county to city control set for November 20. Lorain County schools report steady student gains

Lorain County public schools estimate total enrollment at 65,816, up 5,161 from last year. Elyria schools show a Tuesday surge. enrollment tops 13,312 with a projection near 13,400, a 300 rise from last year. High school 2,480 junior high 2,911 elementary 7,831. Lorain City Schools total 17,117, up from 16,984, with at least 200 more pupils expected by October. First day Lorain count 17,272 with breakdown by level listed.

Lorain County Catholic Schools See Enrollment Drop

Lorain County's 24 Catholic schools report a loss of 499 students this year. Elyria District Catholic High School accounts for 162 of the decline with 739 students, while last year it held 901. Lorain Catholic High School records 390 students, up from 332, as St Mary High School was replaced. Elementary enrollment across eight counties falls 395 from 7,729 to 7,444, with the Cleveland Diocese noting a 36 percent elementary and 3 percent high school decrease.
