Fiery furnace powers tiny silicon circuits for NCR tech
A technician loads 100 silicon wafers each with 100 microcircuit chips into a 1200 degree Celsius oxygen furnace. Oxygen reacts with silicon forming a glass insulation layer for circuitry. The resulting circuit board near the furnace mouth yields computing power rivaling early 1950s experimental computers.

American Express uses TV ads to spur public investment
The article reports American Express employing Karl Malden in television spots to urge consumers to keep traveler's checks as emergency money. While this benefits customers by replacement guarantees, the float from bought but unused checks funds Amex's operations, totaling about 1.86 billion dollars at year end. The campaign is a three-year test to see if holding checks boosts the company’s float, with mixed indications so far.
