Teachers assail reversal on 80 percent pay raises

The Cost of Living Council apparently barred up to 80 percent of school employees from pay hikes. NEA called the ruling an incredible reversal and warned it would disrupt thousands of payrolls while officials clarified that only workers eligible before August 15 on the higher base would receive raises.

Violence in Northern Ireland Claims Soldier and Child

A British soldier died after his Jeep hit a mine near Newry. A civilian burned in a Newry drapery shop bombing. An 18 month old girl Angela Gallagher was shot in Belfast Falls Church area. IRA blamed by police. Provisional IRA denies. Police and troops faced riots with nail bombs and blasts across Belfast and Londonderry.

Blossom Night Shines for Lorain County at Blossom Center

About 600 residents braved threatening skies to attend the second annual Lorain County Night at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls. Lois Lane led the Cleveland Pops Orchestra as the audience rose for a standing ovation, in an event sponsored by The Chronicle Telegram.

Father Bitterly Blames Drug Pushers After Son Barry’s Death

Elyria father Carl Wachtler recalls his 18 year old son Barry died from a 30 foot plunge from the Lorain County Courthouse balcony as he faced sentencing on a drug charge. He laments inadequate laws and blames drug pushers for the tragedy. Barry had a history with marijuana and prior juvenile probation, with his mother’s death cited by some as a factor.

Two Fatal One Car Crashes In Lorain County

A Vermilion youth and a Lorain man died in separate one car high speed crashes about 40 minutes apart. Rayburn Bullard 36 of Lorain ran off Route 58 struck poles and burned near Russia Township. Charles Drennen 19 of Vermilion ran off Route 511 near Rochester Township rolled over and died en route to hospital.

Truck body crushes Elyria Township man to death on farm

Lovell Jones, 38, of Elyria Township, was killed when an old truck body moved with a bulldozer collapsed onto him on his West Ridge Road farm. He died at Elyria Memorial Hospital from chest compression asphyxia.
