Sharp Acquitted After City Mayor Court Jury Trial

Stanley Sharp, West Avenue grocer, was acquitted of driving while intoxicated charges in Mayor James A. Hewitt’s court yesterday. It was the first Elyria mayoral jury trial in years, with the city ordered to pay $95.41 in costs, plus $80.22 in jury fees and mileage, $10.19 sheriff fees, and $5 witness fees. Sharp’s defense cited injuries affecting balance from a August 5 collision at East River and Clark streets. Officer Witter testified no liquor was detected on Sharp’s breath.

Norweg ian Veiding Aims for Nautilus Search in Polar Seas

The Norwegian ice breaker Veiding prepared to sail north from Advent Bay Spitzbergen in a bid to locate the submarine Nautilus. Radio signals picked up in the Arctic Sea were weak and unclear, suspected to originate from the Nautilus, commanded by Sir Hubert Watkins, last reported near the ice edge preparing diving tests toward the North Pole.

Jimmy Doolittle won the Los Angeles Cleveland Bendix Trophy Race landing at Cleveland Airport after a rain dampened field. Major James P Doolittle made a brief refueling stop at Kansas City on the Los Angeles Cleveland Air Derby. Eight aviators started from United Airport Burbank chasing a first prize of fifteen thousand dollars amid ground-level challenges.

Agencies push plans to provide jobs in county area

Two governmental bodies the state and the county promote plans to create employment for several thousand. The state will deploy two more crews next week to fill ditches on state roads in the county. One crew began work yesterday with twenty men hired. At least twice that many will go to work next week.

Equipment for Sanatorium Approved by County Board

Laundry equipment costing about 5200 was purchased for the tuberculosis sanatorium by the county building commission. The panel also let two contracts for silverware. Day Hardware Company of Elyria supplied most items including ironer and dryer for 4698, manufactured by Wilber Miller Company. The washer is from Chicago Dryer Company at about 510. Silverware from Oscar Huserodt Company of Elyria for 680. Specs require Reavers 1447 or equivalent. Chart holders and nurses desks may be reconsidered on September 11.

Reverend A H Mavis marks 11 years at Avon First Baptist

Avon Ohio Sept 4 Rev A H Mavis completes eleven years as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Avon. Since the church’s founding no pastor has stayed longer. Many youths joined during his tenure and church property saw annex construction and auditorium remodeling in 1925. Regular services continue with Sunday school and an 11 18 preaching service next Sunday.
