An unconfirmed dispatch from Osaka reports Oshima Island, the largest in the Idz group, suddenly sank into the sea. The entire population is feared drowned as a half million Japanese possibly perish. The city notes the horror as a possible mass disaster.
Washington reports General McCoy and Colonel Langhorne headed to Yokohama to aid in relief efforts amid massive earthquake fire and destruction across Tokyo Yokohama and surrounding areas. Tokyo alone faces hundreds of thousands dead with widespread ruin and famine threats.
A rain driven crowd of about 10,000 attended the first day of the Lorain County Fair. Exhibits fill the Agricultural Building with fruits vegetables grains and canning, while livestock displays include 150 sheep and several cattle and swine entries. Local granges, beekeepers and sewing clubs reported impressive displays and competition, with the fair named one of the best in years.
Mrs Henry Merthe died this morning at 4 30 at her home 347 Cambridge Street Elyria aged 35 years 9 days after a five week illness. Survived by husband four children E C Merthe Mrs R Heilman of Lorain Mrs Arthur Scuilly of Toledo and Mrs Grove Sanker of high city three sisters three brothers and six grandchildren. She lived in Elyria in early life moved to Huron later and returned to Elyria three years ago. A longtime Evangelical church member of Huron Funeral from 347 Sambridge street Friday at 1 30 Rev Tabbert of Amherst Evangelical will officiate with Rev Handke assisting Burial Murray Ridge Cemetery.
William Gannett 64 a Spencer pioneer died at his home Sunday evening at 1 o'clock. He leaves a widow, a son Warner of Spencer, a daughter Mrs Bernard Hales of Wellington, and three granddaughters. Ducted from his late home in Spencer Wednesday at 2 pm. Rev. Bennett to officiate. interment in Spencer cemetery. Mansfield notes report two farmers Cashell Adams 77 and Christian Kinsey 71 found dead on Labor Day on their farm with heart trouble as cause.
An immense earthquake and ensuing fires devastated the southern half of Honshu, destroying Yokohama Tokyo and vast areas from Yokohama and Tokyo to Osaka. The calamity claimed over 109,900 lives and erased numerous cities towns and villages from the map, with a map illustrating the widespread destruction.
Major Roy Hultz and Elyria veterans attended the 387th Division convention in Akron Sunday and Monday. The gathering organized the 145th Regt Association with officers led by President John R Southam and others. Distinguished guests included Major General Farnsworth, Brigadier Generals Zimmerman and McQuigg, and Col Ralph Cole. The group plans a history of their war service with Allied and German records, and the next meeting in Findlay is expected to host the King of Belgium.
Police Chief Standard orders all autos parked outside business district Cedar Third Chestnut streets and near the NYC Ryard in residential areas to show a rear Tetlight one hour before and after sunrise and sunset. Prosecutions will follow noncompliance after several accidents blamed on the precaution. In Columbus 17 of 19 alleged liquor law violators arrested at Buckeye Lake, Licking county, Labor Day, will be tried before Mayor T M White at Hebron on Wednesday.
Sept. 4. The cabinet endorsed Mussolini’s protest against League of Nations intervention on Italy’s honor. Italy denies occupying Corfu south islands, and Mussolini warns the League cannot judge the issue. If rejected, Italy may leave the League. the Geneva delegate is to withdraw.
Washington September 4 plans for greater cooperation between the federal government and the states to enforce prohibition will be worked out within 24 hours at a conference between President Coolidge and Prohibition Commissioner Haynes, according to a White House announcement this afternoon.
Fire Chief Wallace Bates reports August totals with fewer fires than last year yet a sharp rise in monetary loss. Total calls counted eighty four with forty one occupied responded. fire loss reached 3256 dollars versus 615 dollars a year ago.
The police department received a beautiful saddle horse yesterday from William Sudro the undertaker. The horse was ridden by Officer Sweet and widely admired by onlookers.
Columbus report says prisoners attempted to escape from the work house as bricks in the north wall of the cell corridor were loosened. Guard Sims detected the weakness and halted the plan, preventing a breakout on September 4.
Friends report Mrs Ella Manning found dead in bed at her home 419 East Avenue from heart trouble. Born in New York City, she was orphaned early and raised in Indiana with Joseph Stratton. She married Mr Manning in 1887, lived in Georgetown, Ohio, then moved here 25 years ago to help run a photo gallery. Survived by husband, son Ashley of Los Angeles, and daughter Mrs Eva Tedrow of Lakewood Florida. Funeral plans not announced.
The home of E Spaulding at 1149 East River Street was entered last night through an open ground floor window. A pocketbook containing $65 was stolen and no clue was found. Also a stove near the grand stand at the fair grounds exploded, quickly extinguished with minor damage.
Mayor Jones presided as several defendants appeared before the court. Bert Moyer of Pittsburgh pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated on Broad Street and was fined $25 plus costs. Cedric Randerson Wallington faced sodomy charges and was bound over to the grand jury. Philip Lubinski of Eighteenth Street abused his family and was jailed on disorderly conduct, fined $10 and costs. Leo Davis disturbed at the WY C railroad camp and was fined $2.25 plus costs. Paul Sunero, charged with stealing coal from a car on the B&O, fined $5 and costs. Four other drunks received fines of £5 and costs each.
Public schools will open tomorrow morning for the first semester. A general teachers meeting and sectional meetings were held today. Superintendent Shelton expects a large pupil increase, especially in the high school. Closing of the Franklin school for rebuilding will cause crowded rooms, but they will manage.
A visitor, George C. Rollins of 17444 Northwood Avenue, Lakewood, was hit in the shoulder by a stray bullet at a shooting gallery on the fair grounds yesterday while seated in an automobile. A second similar incident occurred two years ago near the grandstand. Medical staff attended to Rollins and extracted the missile.
