Denver recorded its earliest snowfall on September 3 1961 with city accumulations around 4 inches. The foothills west of the city were buried under wind whipped snow exceeding 2 feet in depth.
In Chloride, near Kingman, 13-year-old Rikki Howard was found dead after disappearing Saturday while riding an ATV. Her 10-year-old half-sister Casie Hicks survived with major injuries and was hospitalized in Las Vegas in critical condition. Authorities recovered the body and identified the victims as the sisters.
U S led coalition and Afghan forces killed about 25 suspected militants during raids on a Taliban command center southwest of Kandahar city. The operation, aided by airstrikes, followed weeks of surveillance and involved two compounds. No coalition or Afghan soldiers were hurt.
