83-Year-Old Golfer Keeps Swinging on Thursdays

Rene McPherson, who turns 83 on Labor Day, plays nine holes weekly with the Lorain County Women's Association at Cherry Ridge. She shot 113 once and 139 another time, values friendship over score, and keeps golf as long as her arms and legs work, aided by a pacemaker since 1977.

Edison Chargers Ride 27-Game Winning Streak Since 1979

Edison High School's football team, led by coach Jim Whittington, has compiled a 27 game winning streak dating from a 24-0 win over South Central on September 21, 1979, and has not lost since. The streak eclipses the 25 straight by Oberlin (1964-66) in area history. Edison also failed to win 27 straight Firelands Conference games only once, in 1978 against New London. The team won six shutouts last season and defeated Monroeville 28-0 and South Central 8-37 as two second-place foes. Whittington warns the streak cannot last forever but remains confident in a rebound if it ends, noting early practice pressure and only two returning starters.
