Alaska's secret stay-behind agents trained for wartime
Declassified records reveal a covert US program codenamed Washtub to recruit Alaska civilians including fishermen and pilots as stay-behind agents in case of a Soviet invasion. OSI and FBI documents show 89 agents trained 1951 to 1959, with caches and radios to report enemy movements. One listed agent, Dyton Gilliland of Cooper Landing, died in 1955 after parachute training in 1951.
