Expensive tickets and budgets fuel summer box office surge
Los Angeles reports a blockbuster season with record receipts looming despite many duds. Higher ticket prices at about nine dollars and production budgets up around a quarter helped the summer pull ahead of 1996’s $2.38 billion, though profits were scarce for most films. Sony dominated with hits like Men in Black and Air Force One, boosting its market share to 23.4 percent from 9.1 percent a year earlier.
