Elyria Catholic under new coach Fred Schmitz routed Lorain Senior 56-0 in the season opener at Knights of Columbus Field. Star tailback Al McKinney rushed 176 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries as EC extended its winning streak to 14 games.
Elyria West tried to upset Oberlin with a fast passing attack but fell 29 23. Coach Mosher praised comebacks and receivers while Oberlin’s defense held in crunch time and captain Ham mond credited the effort. Todd Tarney connected with Ed Gawlik for a 33 yard TD early.
Jeff Riesen led North Ridgeville to a 21-7 victory over Elyria High in the opener. Elyria fumbled four times and had 35 yards in penalties while NR kept a clean record with no fumbles or interceptions and just two penalties. Riesen stressed avoiding big plays and mistakes as key to the win. Wright, Poyman, and Biro produced for NR as Elyria squandered chances in a game shaping on defense and execution.
