Madrid reports a rebel air raid early today with two bombs causing no immediate damage. Government air warnings and new emergency laws prompt curfews and strict lighting controls as residents seek shelter in cellars and basements amid sirens and anti-aircraft fire.
Rebel planes conducted two raids on Tein near the French Spanish frontier, dropping incendiaries that set fires in the city and caused unknown casualties. Loyalist outposts endured heavy shelling as rebels released 25 bombs in the larger raid, with a Caproni bomber delivering five bombs to the center of town.
The Spanish government assured the United States it will conduct a rigid investigation into the bombing of the U S Destroyer Kane by a Spanish airplane off the Spanish coast last Sunday. The Madrid embassy informed the State Department.

In Columbus Ohio the illness of Miss Evelyn Smith from Findlay, a Grant Hospital student nurse, puzzles doctors. For two months she has alternating chills and fever up to 197 degrees, with periods of apparent health and no pain. The attack appears suddenly, and her condition has changed little over months. Miss Smith has studied nursing for three years.
Lorain County schools will expand practical courses in the upcoming year under guidance of County Superintendent GC Gibbons. New programs include vocational agriculture at Brigshton and Camden, home economics for girls at Clear View Lonhoul, and full or enlarged commercial departments at Wellington and South Amherst. Algebra is being replaced in some schools by general mathematics for noncollege tracks, with new arithmetic and history texts adopted and many books to be provided free under state law.
Four bodies were found in a burning Carbon Hill home in a presumed murder fire. Marcus Studdard, a coal miner, his wife and two children were named among the victims, with authorities treating the blaze as a triple murder and arson case.
Three Metz brothers died in a water filled coal mine near Fulton while attempting to rescue a fourth, Louis Metz 32, who succumbed to gas. The fate of Farnest 25, Feaddin 21, and Harry 19 remained uncertain as gas or drowning. Wolfe Metz, father in law, was critically ill from gas poisoning. The incident follows another local mine disaster two weeks earlier. More than 500 gathered as rescues continued and mine pumps worked to clear water.
A public hearing is set in the county commissioners' office for September 17 at 2 p.m. to discuss possible damages from widening Chestnut Ridge road for four miles through Carlisle Eaton and Ridgeville townships.
