Girl helps avert Oberlin hostage shootout case

Pan American World Airways a special performance Boeing 747 flew around the Earth over the North and South Poles in 48 hours 3 minutes to mark its 50th birthday and the Golden Anniversary of U S international aviation. The polar flight shaved about half a day from the 1965 record set by a Boeing 707 cargo jet.

Seven swim to island after boat sinks in Lake Erie

Seven people aboard a 30 foot sports fisherman sank in Lake Erie near Sandusky. They swam to North Harbor Island on the Canadian side where Coast Guard rescue teams expect to pluck them from the water. The vessel was piloted by Kevin Gottro n of Fremont and owned by Happy Days Boating Co of Port Clinton. A Sandusky father planned another boat transfer to bring them back. Coast Guard stations Detroit and Marblehead dispatched a helicopter after the distress call.
