Thousands filled Broad Street and side avenues for a downtown Halloween celebration. Costumed marchers included ghosts highwaymen dancers and varied groups while spectators climbed cars and light poles to view the parade from West to Last avenues. The route featured marching bands and diverse grotesque and humorous costumes.
Police described a quiet Halloween with few incidents. Celebrants largely blamed on downtown festivities which provided an outlet for mischief. The downtown celebration was declared one of the largest ever held in the area.
Elyria hosts a cosmopolitan Halloween eve with Spaniards, Mexicans, French, English and other nationalities in costumes, plus unidentified figures. After a parade thousands linger in Ely Park for music and free refreshments, as Mayor James A. Hewitt lauds Kiwanis Club and civic groups for coordinating a remarkably successful celebration.
The Ohio region may see light rain tonight and Sunday with cloudy conditions in the west on Sunday and little change in temperature. Yesterday’s high temperatures included Los Angeles 92 Phoenix 83 and Miami 82, while lows ranged from Goodland 18 Rapid 16 to North Platte 18. A slow eastward pressure pattern suggests unsettled showers in the area over the next 24 hours, followed by clearing and cooler weather on Sunday.
Monros H. Welty closes more than thirty years of Lorain county public service in the auditor's office. Since 1900 he has seen records move from handwritten ledgers to modern bookkeeping. Welty began under George Lewis, later served as auditor, and helped oversee real estate reappraisal work this year. Plans for the future are indefinite.
Cincinnati police held 35 year old Edwin J Bernstein and Joe Goldman on charges of using the mails to defraud. Bernstein, tied to the Rosemere Poultry Farm and real estate schemes, was arrested after earlier bond release and re jailed on fraudulent check allegations from Pittsburgh.
Howard Williams and J B Matthews urged support for world peace and avoiding another world war at a Elyria Woman's Club event at First Congregational Church. The talks covered disarmament world organization removing hostility causes war resistance and peace education with music by the Chamber Music Ensemble before the speeches.
Frank Ciccone, 20, of Columbus, was identified by three witnesses in Marysville as one of three robbers who stole 10,000 dollars from the Richwood Farmers' Deposit bank on October 23. Identifications were made by bank cashier J. G. Zuspan and by B. F. Hoge and Charles Snowden, present during the robbery.
The Community Chest drive announces added leaders and teams for the campaign. Chauncey Smythe lists new appointees including Worth Fauver as assistant Manager, Dan Symons and Mig Edwin Gillis in leadership roles, and J B Johnson and multiple Lions Club and American Legion teams set to captain solicitations.
A report to the Lo tain County Automobile Club claimed 1932 license plates would not go on sale until December 21 but a Columbus letter says the tag will go on sale December 1 and may be used on and after December 21.
E L Bailey assistant county superintendent of schools will speak at the weekly Young Men's Club meeting at the Y M C A Monday night. His topic has not been announced.
Sir Hubert Wilkins announced plans for a new polar voyage in a specially built submarine, pending finances. He described the Nautilus journey, including converting a discarded US navy sub, rough Atlantic crossing, a motor failure, a tow to Ireland for repairs, and hardships aboard during the voyage.
Dr. C Jay Miller joined the Elyria City Board of Health as successor to BR. Cautle after Mayor Hewartt appointed him. October saw 308 tests by the city chemist 192 inspections by the food inspector 371 nurse visits and 16 quarantine signs for a chickenpox outbreak. disease now in decline with no other contagion. Curtis reported 308 tests 273 milk tests while George W Savage noted 192 inspections across markets and stores and condemned 10 pounds of spare ribs three bushels vegetables two and one half bushels grapes and half bushel of bananas. One arrest and conviction for selling milk without a permit.
Edward Les Hawk, an internationally known human analyst, will give a free lecture at the YMCA at 3 pm. He will demonstrate human analysis by examining several children whose parents request analyses. The event is open to the public without charge.
Dr H F Gammons announces that about 35 to 40 staff will be hired for the $425000 tuberculosis sanatorium within two weeks. Hundreds have already applied for nurses aides waitresses and cleaners with about 60 for nurses and attendants from Lorain county. Salaries and positions are set by trustees and county commissioners with training costs estimated at twenty dollars per recruit.
William L Edison plans to contest the Edison will by alleging undue influence. He will confer with his attorney in New York Monday to start action aimed at breaking a will leaving most of a 12 million dollar estate to Charles and Theodore Edison. He says he acts for himself and will not join his family in the contest.
Steubenville report says Thomas Tedmire of Martins Ferry picked up two hitch hikers. They beat him unconscious, robbed him of 19 dollars, dumped him in a ditch, and drove off with his car. Earlier Mrs Frank Doebal’s car crashed into a pole at Cleveland and Bridge Streets. no injuries reported.
A joint Wellington and Lorain county fair boards meeting and county commissioners discussed uniting the two fairs. A committee of three commissioners plus fairboard members will study attendance receipts and facilities, then report with recommendations before year’s end.
Elyria firemen rushed to aid a dog after a Wee man reported a dog stranded in the Black River opposite St. Clair street. A boat was launched, but no dog or observers were found, and crews concluded the animal had apparently finished its bath and returned home despite the steep bank.
