Scarcity of women may alter marriage picture in 90s
Chicago demographers predict a tighter marriage market in the 1990s with fewer marriageable women relative to men. Analysts like Jib Fowles and Marie Bousfield foresee earlier marriages, stronger commitments, and less divorce, possibly echoing 1950s family life, while others caution attitudes have shifted. The 1970 to 1990 shifts show Chicago moving from 87 marriageable men per 100 women to 114 per 100 by 1990.
