Mack Truck workers return as UAW talks end nine day strike
Pickets at Mack facilities in Allentown Mackungie and Hagerstown and at a Bridgewater distribution center faded as 9,200 U S workers prepared to report for duty after Mack and the United Auto Workers reached a tentative three year contract. The strike that began October 21 shut U S plants and cut Canadian output, with 450 Ontario employees laid off. The union and Mack officials said the agreement includes job security and economic gains and requires suspension of the strike while rank and file votes are held on November 11. Production resumed at Hagerstown and Pennsylvania plants with full U S production expected by Wednesday. Canadian recall likely later due to parts delays from Ontario.

Reagan's mandate do nothing in a second term
Washington debate centers on what a Reagan landslide would mean for policy. Officials say no clear second term plan exists beyond possible reforms to farm subsidies and health programs, with deregulation debated but risks in safety and environmental rules. Budget and tax reform are discussed, yet any mandate may simply be to maintain status quo, avoid tax increases, and limit spending cuts while deficits persist.
