Study finds 23 million U.S. adults functionally illiterate
Washington The U S Office of Education released results of a four year study showing more than 23 million U S adults cannot read ads or make economical purchases. The report notes higher rates of functional illiteracy among older, less educated, unskilled, and poorer populations with blacks and Spanish surnames particularly affected. Adults struggle most with consumer skills such as counting money using catalogs understanding credit and buying housing or cars. Males and females perform similarly and higher income education and job status correlate with better functioning.
