Elyria Accepts 6.2 Million Federal Grant for West Sewer Line

Elyria votes to speed the westside interceptor project with a 6.2 million federal grant. Mayor Keys says the grant offsets accelerated work and will help keep residential sewer rates from rising, with long term savings expected. The $55 million upgrade is to be done in seven phases within three years to meet grant conditions.

United Way cuts allocations due to USX strike

The United Way of Greater Lorain County will reduce allocations to 34 agencies by 5 percent starting November 1 as the USX Lorain plant strike drains pledges. Debra Krausher said the cut affects the remainder of the fiscal year ending March 31, 1987, with a 7 percent cut to headquarters funds.

Vermilion resident William Thomas 46 died by suicide Monday during police attempt to serve a first degree felony warrant at his home on Elyria Drive. Officers knocked, Thomas said to fetch his coat, then fired. Coroner to determine cause. His wife had died about a year earlier. a daughter was at school.
