Justice Lauer Home Raided by Eight Customs Agents

New York October 28 Justice Ed gar L Lauer of the State Supreme Court said a raid on his Park Avenue home by eight United States customs officers hunting for smuggled goods stemmed from an exaggerated story told by a discharged German maid. The search lasted six hours and four suitcases were removed. Albert N Chaperau was arrested on a charge of moving nine pieces of luggage past customs without inspection claiming to be a Nicaragua consular representative. The maid Rosa Weber testified that the Lauers returned aboard the Normandie with five trunks in June and that contents were kept in a steel safe. The affair may stem from a party where critics of Hitler were present. Chaperau posted a $20 000 bond. Lauer was elected to the Supreme Court in 1935 on Republican and Fusion tickets.
