Amherst fire levy renewal sought to fund pumps and radios
Amherst voters on Tuesday decide renewal of the Amherst Fire Department small equipment levy for five years. If approved, funds will buy two pumpers replacing 1957 and 1968 models, a four wheel drive multipumper and new radio gear with other equipment as needed. Fire Chief Walter Gambish notes inflation has raised pump prices from 65000 to 85000 in three years. Elyria physician Francisca B Leano named Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians after completing 600 hours of study and passing diplomate exams.

Amherst fire levy push aims to curb insurance rates
Gambish argued that front line pumpers are vital for fighting major fires and that a $22,000 mini pump would handle nuisance blazes. He noted the 23 year old communication system would fail without power, and new gear costing $4,000 to $6,000 could run on batteries. With continued public support, the town hopes to keep home insurance costs down.
