Pope strips conservative cardinal from second Vatican council panel
Pope John Paul II began a Vatican shakeup by removing Cardinal Pericle Felici, 77, as head of the Commission for the Interpretation of Second Vatican Council Decrees. The move signals a broader reform effort amid calls to replace aging officials and delay in naming a new secretary of state. Felici’s roles at the Vatican appeals tribunal and canon law commission were highlighted in a communique, while his presidency of the interpretation commission was omitted. Felici is a longtime figure from the council era, and the pope is seen as aiming to install a new prelate to head the commission soon.
