Civilians Mistaken for Viet Cong by U S Forces

In the Saigon area eight civilians including women and children were killed and seven wounded when a U S Army 1st Division patrol opened fire during an ambush after an unidentified group approached in the dark. Officials said the civilians bore no noise or lights, resembling Viet Cong. The incident occurred amid Operation Allentown during President Johnsons visit.

The USS Oriskany suffered a devastating hangar deck fire causing 43 deaths, many officers and pilots among the dead or seriously burned. Ex-area pilot among 43 killed in carrier Oriskany fire

Lt. (jg) Cody A Balisteri, 25, formerly of Sheffield Lake, died after being trapped below decks as the carrier Oriskany burned off the coast of North Vietnam. He was a 1959 Brookside High School graduate and Miami University alum. His family has since moved to Culver City California. He served about three years in the Navy and earned Wings after training at Pensacola.

Vermilion Marina Fire Destroys Several Cabin Cruisers

A marina fire in Vermilion destroyed three cabin cruisers and damaged another two. Firefighters battled the blaze for over three hours as investigators search for a cause, with losses estimated near 25 to 30 thousand dollars.
