Refuge manager Fred Zeillemaker says the subspecies could be delisted within a few years once nesting on multiple islands exceeds threshold, crediting fox removal and a ban on hunting in California wintering grounds.

Additional clubs schedule Sunday and Saturday shoots with varied prizes from meat to ham and bacon, with times from noon to evening and entry fees noted. The Lorain area hosts Beagle Club, Lodi Gun Club, VFW Post 7576, Columbia Game Club, Amherst Sportsman Club, and Elyria Amvets, all offering weekly or weekend turkey shoots through December or November 4, with diverse prizes and locations including Vermilion Sunnyside Road, Gore Orphanage Road, and Cooper Foster Park Road.
