Chronicle-Telegram reports an eighth installment answering questions on the 6.5 mill operating levy. It states 20 percent for kindergarten and wage benefits, 40 percent for opening Erie Elementary and hiring junior high teachers, and 20 percent for transport and expanded vocational programs.
A 20 year old soldier from Amherst, Pfc. Michael D. May, received the Bronze Star for valor near Chu Lai, South Vietnam. He serves in Company C, 1st Battalion, Sind Infantry, Americal Division's 198th Light Infantry Brigade and joined the Army last September after graduating from Amherst's Mation L Steele High School.
President Nixon directs all federal vehicles to switch to low lead or unleaded gasoline where feasible and asks state governors to do the same for state owned cars. The move covers about 600000 government cars and aims to cut hydro carbon emissions while expanding access to cleaner fuels.
Dr. Henri Bellemare, chief of internal medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital, describes being arrested at 5:10 a.m. during 370 plus detentions under Canada’s War Measures Act. He faced five days in jail without charges. many detainees were released, while others suffered emotional trauma. The act allows warrantless arrests, detention up to 21 days, 90 day property holds, censorship, and penalties for aiding outlawed groups amid Quebec FLQ kidnappings and bombings.
Aztec Chemical Co. avoids a nuisance charge after agreeing to odor control. The court settlement requires monitoring the air scrubber, logging effectiveness, testing discharges, and reporting to the city. If violations recur, the city may press anew with neutral expert arbitration.
An explosion shattered windows at the kitchen and basement of a police officer's parents home in Minneapolis just before midnight. No injuries were reported. Mrs. Stanley Fiega Sr. said there may be a connection to her son who is a policeman.
Three more Kent State University cases were arrested today bringing total arrests to 17 on grand jury indictments. Jeffrey Hartzler John Gerbett and Thomas D Miller faced second degree riot charges. Hartzler was not enrolled at the university but attended the Orville center when the disturbances occurred. Gerbett was a freshman and Miller had been a student in last winter quarter. The grand jury indicted five people in the May 4 clashes that left four KSU students dead.
United Fund Residential Division reports 303 percent of its $45 000 goal at a luncheon in the Sheffield Center with $13 651 raised. Campaign leaders praise volunteers and note four standout contributors as the drive heads to a final noon meeting tomorrow.
Avon Lake police report a 33 year old woman Harriett Cherni died when her car traveling about 50 mph left Lake Road and struck a tree near Miller Road. The vehicle wrapped around the tree and there were no skid marks. She was pronounced dead at Lorain St Joseph Hospital.
