Red China asserted ownership of the 400 year old Macao colony and warned Portugal’s occupation cannot continue. Propaganda organs distributed the claim while Western and local observers viewed it as a potential opening move in a broader Communist push.
Peiping cited Indian support for Macao’s return to China as a matter of policy. The Lorain County jail inspection was condemned by Communist officials who labeled Portugal's rule over Goa and Daman as an insult to Asian peoples. Macao, described as Chinese territory, is contrasted with Hong Kong which remains unreferenced in this push.
