Racket Buster Leads G. O. P. In New York
In Albany a 36 year old Midwesterner may run for President in 1940 and leads the Republican forces for governor. Thomas E. Dewey, famed racket buster, heads the GOP drive against Democrat Gov. Herbert Lehman. A Dewey victory would signal a national shift from the New Deal and shape the postwar political landscape. Lehman and Dewey frame the race around corruption, finance, and state issues as polls hint a close contest. If Sen. Wagner and Rep. Mead win, the New Deal would gain one Senate seat, reshaping party strength.
