Suspect Muhammad faced two courts-martial in Guard days
Records show John Allen Muham mad born as John A. Williams served in the Louisiana National Guard in the 1970s and 80s then the regular Army. He fought in Desert Storm as an engineer, earned the Army Achievement Medal and Gulf War ribbons, and was discharged in 1994 as a sergeant after a controversial court-martial for striking a sergeant.
