A marble slab bearing Philemon Pierce obituary shows a death date of November 9 1663. Pierce reportedly rests beside his wife under a pine in Elyria near La Porte and Third streets. Dale Kellogg Lorain County History finds Pierce in the 1660 census a wagon maker from Carlisle Township.

Mystery Tombstone Buried Philemon Discovered at Cemetery

Elwood Alcott Pierce, 74, reports a tombstone for Philemon, died 1883 aged 55 years, found at Ridge Road and Route 19. The stone shows Philemon and wife Dianths Pierce, later marked by a shared monument. Philemon, a wagon maker, invented farm machinery though one effort failed.
