Elyria school tax levy approved for 1929 budget
The Board of Education approved a $614,807.59 tax levy for all school purposes in 1929, a slight rise from last year. The budget allocates 3449,577.05 to the general fund, 125,424.88 to sinking and bond retirement, 15,004.78 to a library, and 25,000.85 to building improvement. The library, a new item, is funded to secure a free public library, previously supported by the Community Chest and rent income now cut off. The board aims to avoid increasing bonded indebtedness and plans an expansion program including temporary relief through a new building on the Abbey road site to relieve overcrowding at Gates and Jefferson schools. The west side is included in long-range plans, with tentative site moves and timing subject to city development, while maintaining annual savings to ease costs. The public misperception that school taxes exceed city taxes is addressed, noting other city expenses like water charges. The item continues on page 2.
