Revival of Archery Sparks National Interest After Civil War
Postwar Confederate veterans Maurice and Will Thompson revive archery in the United States by learning from Seminole hunters in Florida. Maurice writes influential essays, leading to the 1879 formation of the National Archery Association in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and the first national tournament in Chicago. Weather and season limits hinder Pennsylvania deer hunting, with a cool start but hot days reducing movement and threatening a poor season. Black River Bow Benders hold a 28 position Sunday.
