Cleveland area supermarket workers plan a tonight vote on a three year contract offer from Local 880 AFL-CIO. Rejection could trigger a strike. The union cites salary cuts of one dollar for senior workers, one fewer vacation week, and loss of a personal holiday.
Federal agents arrested three men in a Brook Park air freight drug ring. Unindicted co conspirator Richard Marsico of Elyria and Mario Adamo of Florida were named as part of a 16 count indictment unsealed after arrests. Bernard La Stella of Westlake and Carmen J Angelo Jr. of Brook Park pleaded innocent in U. S. District Court to racketeering and drug distribution charges. Other named figures include Richard A Davis of California and Daniel S Lasecki of Strongsville, with Lasecki being sought. The case covers cocaine shipments from Florida to northern Ohio between 1979 and 1980. Stella faces up to 15 years and fines up to 475,000, with bond contested. The Strike Force seeks forfeiture of Stella’s business and home.
Lorain County absentee voting neared a record, with 5630 residents either voting absentee or requesting ballots by Monday, far surpassing 1980's 1097. Officials predict up to 7500 total absentee voters as deadlines loom. Ballots due by 7:30 p.m. November 6. The governor Celeste enjoys broad support with unclear reasons.
Avon Lake autoworkers at Ford Motors Ohio Truck Plant voted down the national three year agreement by 448 to 310, a 59 percent rejection. UAW Local 2000 president John Hatcher cited tiered raises and lost personal days as reasons. Meanwhile GM Elyria Fisher Guide plant ratified a local deal two to one, and Avon Lake ratified a separate local agreement 587 to 175 guaranteeing layoff order and adding two canteen areas.
